The logistics industry keeps the UK moving. Every day, goods, food, raw materials and essential supplies travel across the country, supporting businesses, communities and consumers alike. That’s why the Government’s Autumn Budget is always closely watched by the transport sector.
The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has recently submitted its recommendations to Government, highlighting the key challenges facing haulage operators and the support needed to ensure the industry can continue to drive economic growth.
From my perspective as Transport Manager at Meachers, many of these priorities reflect the realities we see every day. The logistics sector is facing rising costs, ongoing skills shortages and the challenge of transitioning to lower-emission operations, all while maintaining the reliable service that customers depend on.
Road freight remains the dominant form of goods transport in the UK, making it a critical part of the country’s economic infrastructure. Yet operators continue to face significant pressures, from fuel costs and regulatory requirements to investment in people, vehicles and technology.
The decisions made in this year’s Budget could have a direct impact on the efficiency, competitiveness and long-term sustainability of the UK logistics industry.
The Key Issues
Fuel Duty
Fuel remains one of the largest operating costs for transport businesses. The RHA is calling for the continuation of the fuel duty freeze and the introduction of an Essential User Rebate for commercial vehicle operators.
For haulage companies, stable fuel costs provide certainty and help prevent additional costs from being passed through the supply chain. Ultimately, keeping transport costs under control benefits businesses and consumers alike.
Investing in Better Roads
Reliable road infrastructure is essential for efficient logistics. Congestion, delays and poor road conditions not only increase operating costs but also affect service levels and productivity.
The RHA is encouraging continued investment in strategic road projects and road maintenance to improve journey reliability and support economic growth.

Addressing Skills Shortages
Recruiting and retaining talent remains one of the industry’s biggest challenges. With an ageing workforce and increasing demand for skilled drivers and technicians, the sector must attract the next generation of logistics professionals.
The RHA is calling for continued investment in driver training and skills programmes to help secure the future workforce needed to keep supply chains moving.
Supporting Decarbonisation
The logistics industry is committed to reducing emissions, but the transition to cleaner vehicles and alternative fuels requires significant investment.
The RHA has highlighted the need for greater support for charging infrastructure, low-carbon fuels and funding opportunities that help operators make progress towards net-zero goals.

What I’d Like to See in the Budget
If I had a wish list for the Chancellor, it would focus on measures that deliver long-term benefits for both logistics businesses and the customers we serve:
- Continued stability around fuel duty to help businesses plan with confidence.
- Ongoing investment in key road infrastructure and maintenance programmes.
- Long-term support for driver training and skills development.
- Practical funding and incentives that make decarbonisation achievable.
- Policies that encourage businesses to invest in fleets, technology and operational improvements.
Looking Ahead
The logistics sector plays a vital role in the UK’s success, but it needs the right conditions to thrive.
The RHA’s Budget submission sets out a clear case for supporting an industry that keeps goods moving, businesses supplied and shelves stocked. As someone working in transport every day, I believe many of these recommendations would help create a stronger, more efficient and more sustainable logistics sector.
