Inspiring the Next Generation While Shaping the Future of Our Industry

One of the things I enjoy most about working in logistics is that no two days are ever the same. Our industry is constantly evolving, embracing new technologies, tackling new challenges and creating opportunities for people from all kinds of backgrounds. That’s why I’m particularly looking forward to this year’s MTCP Careers Day on 19 November at the ABP Ocean Cruise Terminal in Southampton.

As a member of the Maritime and Transport Careers Programme (MTCP), Meachers Global Logistics is proud to support an event that helps young people discover the incredible variety of careers available across the maritime, transport and logistics sectors. From warehouse operations and transport planning to engineering, sustainability, marketing, finance and technology, there are far more opportunities in our industry than many people realise.

The Careers Day, now in its third year, brings together employers and students from across the region, giving them the chance to ask questions, take part in interactive activities and hear directly from people working in the industry today. For many young people, it could be the first time they’ve considered a career in logistics or maritime, and that’s exactly why events like this are so important.

At Meachers, we’re passionate about developing future talent. Today’s students are tomorrow’s logistics coordinators, engineers, sustainability specialists and business leaders. By helping them understand what’s possible, we’re also helping to secure the future of an industry that keeps businesses, communities and economies moving every day.

Being part of MTCP brings huge benefits, not just for Meachers but for the wider sector. It allows us to work closely with employers, educators and industry partners who all share the same goal of attracting new talent and raising awareness of the opportunities available. Through MTCP, we’ve been able to engage with schools and colleges, support careers initiatives and collaborate with organisations that are equally committed to developing the workforce of the future.

This year’s event is especially significant because it’s taking place alongside an important industry roundtable focused on the electrification of the Port of Southampton. The discussion will bring together industry representatives and local MPs to explore the opportunities and challenges associated with port electrification, the infrastructure required to support it and the role it will play in helping our sector reduce emissions and meet future sustainability goals.

For me, the connection between these two events couldn’t be clearer. While the Careers Day is focused on inspiring the next generation, the electrification roundtable is focused on building the future they’ll inherit. The young people attending on 19 November will be the ones helping to deliver the innovations, technologies and sustainable solutions that our industry will rely on in the years ahead.

That’s why I’m so pleased that both conversations are happening on the same day. One is about attracting future talent; the other is about creating a future industry worth joining.

I look forward to meeting students, educators and fellow businesses at the MTCP Careers Day and continuing to work with MTCP, industry partners and policymakers to ensure our sector remains innovative, sustainable and full of opportunity for generations to come.
