The EU’s Deforestation-Free Regulation: What It Means for Global Supply Chains

From 30 December 2025, the European Union will enforce the Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products (EUDR), a landmark step toward sustainable trade and environmental responsibility. This regulation impacts businesses importing or exporting certain commodities to and from the EU, and its implications are significant for global supply chains.

What Is Changing?

Under EU Regulation (EU) 2023/1115, companies must ensure that products sold or exported from the EU do not contribute to global deforestation or forest degradation. This initiative is part of the European Union Green Deal, supporting climate goals, biodiversity protection, and sustainable supply chains.

Which Products Are Affected?

The regulation applies to “relevant products”, including:

  • Timber
  • Coffee
  • Cocoa
  • Soy
  • Palm oil
  • Cattle
  • Rubber
(Including derived products such as beef and paper.)

Why It Matters

Deforestation and forest degradation are major drivers of climate change and biodiversity loss. By introducing strict due diligence requirements, the EU aims to promote transparency and sustainability across global supply chains. For businesses, this is not just about compliance, it’s about aligning with environmental and social responsibility goals that customers increasingly demand.
