Meachers Global Logistics opened its doors to pupils at The Burgate School in Fordingbridge, giving them a unique opportunity to learn about the UK logistics industry and the rewarding careers it offers.
The visit to Meachers’ warehouse in Nursling, Southampton, was part of ‘Immersive Days’ organised by the Maritime and Transport Careers Programme (MTCP), to coincide with National Apprenticeship Week (5-11 February).
The MTCP has partnered with Maritime UK, Business South, Solent Partners, and Solent Careers Hub, to raise awareness of marine and transport industry career opportunities in the Central South.
Immersive Days offer local schools and colleges the chance to visit businesses in the region and engage with local employers.
As part of the visit, students were given a site tour, introductions to the business and the wider logistics industry, and a talk about the variety of careers in the sector.
Pupils also got to see first-hand the processes and procedures Meachers use to send goods around the globe, put questions to its staff, and explore one of its iconic yellow HGVs.
Gary Whittle, Commercial Director at Meachers, said:
“We were thrilled when we were approached by the MTCP to help kick off its first Immersive Day; a great way to get young people aware of careers and opportunities in the transport and maritime sector.
“It was inspiring to see the pupils interested in finding out more about our industry and putting questions to our team about what encouraged them to consider a career in logistics.”
Katie Bruce, Engagement Officer at MTCP, added:
“I’d like to thank Gary and his team for supporting the MTCP with the launch of our first Immersive Day. Engaging with and visiting employers is a really great way for young people to see what type of businesses and careers are right on their doorstep.
“We are planning more days like this in the future. So, if you’re a local employer who isn’t a member of MTCP but still wants to support young people, please get in touch through the Solent Careers Hub at [email protected].”
